10 Tips for Getting Beautiful Skin for the New Year

By Monet Moore Posted on

The New Year is finally here! We all hope for glamorous skin for the new year, but sometimes that feel unattainable. Not anymore! While perfect skin won't magically appear, there are a multitude of steps you can take to make your skin look it's best.

Check out our top 10 tips for getting beautiful skin for the new year!

1. Wash Your Face

Washing your face is extremely important to the health of your skin. Making sure all the dirt, oil, and dead skin you’ve collected throughout the day is removed from your skin gives your face a chance to breathe. It also prevents that grime from clogging your pores, which can lead to acne.

2. Take Your Makeup Off EVERY NIGHT

Just like washing your face, taking your makeup off at the end of the day (no matter how tired you are) is essential to preventing many of the most common skin conditions. Makeup prevents your skin from breathing by clogging up your pores. By sleeping in your makeup, you allow it to fester and have a higher chance of creating acne.

Bottom line: Take your makeup off and wash your face

3. Use products for your skin type

It can be extremely overwhelming to look up and down the skincare aisle at the store. Being constantly bombarded with ads about the next new product that you HAVE TO HAVE doesn’t exactly help.

The best course of action is to start with understanding your skin type. Are you oily, combination, dry, acne prone, etc.? By knowing your skin type, you can then search for products that are made for your needs. The more specific you get, the more likely you will be to find something that works.

4. Use less products

We’ve seen countless posts about the ultimate skincare routine, or the 10-step Korean skincare routine. I’ve even posted one myself!

When it comes to your personal routine, you have to find a system that works for you. Sometimes less is more. Even though the guides may say you need a toner, you personally may not. Even if the guide says you need to do a face mask, you may not. Take the guides and adapt them to fit you.

5. Don't wash with hot water

As important as washing is, it’s even more essential that it is done properly. This means making sure the water you’re using is not too hot. Warm water is perfect for opening your pores and allowing your face wash to penetrate. Hot water, on the other hand, can burn your skin and damage the skin cells you’re trying to protect. Stick to warm water.

6. Don't over-exfoliate

Exfoliating is a fantastic way to remove dead skin cells that cling to your face and revitalize the skin. That being said, there can be too much of a good thing. Exfoliating too much or with the wrong product can create micro-tears in the skin and damage the new skin that is being grown. Be gentle when you exfoliate and keep it to once or twice per week.

7. Moisturize daily

I cannot stress this enough. Moisturizing is a non-optional step of your skincare routine. No matter your skin type, moisturizing gives your skin a much needed boost of hydration, preventing it from drying out, killing skin cells, and potentially creating acne.

8. Wash your sheets and makeup brushes

Your sheets and your makeup brushes are probably one of the dirtiest places that your face consistently goes. Even if you clean your face every night, it still hits a dirty pillow or is tapped by a dirty makeup sponge each day. Give your sheets and your makeup brushes a wash each week to keep them nice and germ free.

9. Use sunscreen

One of the biggest culprits of acne, wrinkles, sunspots, moles, and other skin conditions is exposure to the sun. The sun is power, and while it feels incredible on the skin, it is causing damage. Lessen that damage by applying sunscreen to your face and body before heading outside.

10. Start carrying oil absorbing sheets

A great method for not only preserving makeup, but helping to unclog your pores is the use oil absorbing sheets throughout the day. Blotting with the sheets removes the excess oil from your skin and stops it from setting into your pores and aggravating acne. You can find a compact set of oil absorbing sheets from just about any drugstore.
