5 Tips for Healthy Winter Skin

5 Tips for Healthy Winter Skin

By Staff Account Posted on

With the falling snowflakes, warm fires, and fun holidays, it’s no wonder how winter is one of the most lovely seasons of the year. However, there is something much less lovely about winter: dry, chapped skin. The winter weather, as beautiful as it is from the living room window, holds rough temperatures and wind that can cause damage to the skin if not properly cared for.

Cold temperatures with swirling dry air suck away moisture, leaving the skin dry, rough, dehydrated, cracked, and sometimes bleeding. Skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis flare up during the winter months, often worsening if not treated.

In an effort to curb some of the sufferings, we have 5 tips for maintaining healthy skin during winter.

Purchase a Humidifier

You might consider a humidifier to only be useful during illness. After all, it is often recommended for those suffering from a cold, flu, or sinus infection. However, this is a fantastic tool for those with dry skin, especially during winter.

Humidifiers work by dispersing water into the air and increasing the water content. The skin absorbs the moisture in the air, increasing its hydration and decreasing the chance for your skin to become dry and cracked.

In addition to hydrating the underlayer of the skin, hydrating the skin from the outside means it will look more young, plump, and glowy. Investing in a humidifier is a game-changer when it comes to hydration.

Use a Gentle Cleanser

Cleansing is one of the most important steps in any skincare routine. Regardless of the time of year, you should be cleansing twice a day at minimum, morning and evening. That being said, the type of cleanser you use matters as well.

As we’ve said, the skin gets dry and more prone to damage during winter. If you don’t already use one, switch to a more gentle cleanser this time of year. It’s important not to be too rough, especially if your face is already broken. A gentle cleanse with your fingertips is all you need.

Moisturize Frequently

Moisturizing is key to healthy, glowing skin. No matter your skin type, moisturizer is a vital step in your skincare routine. Moisturizer acts as a hydration agent. Your skin naturally produces an oil called sebum. Too much sebum, and you end up with an oily skin type; too little, and your face becomes dry. During winter, you’re more likely to produce less sebum as the dry air takes hold. In both cases, acne, rough texture, and dull complexion are symptoms of a dehydrated face. To get the most benefit, apply your moisturizer right after washing your face. Shop our favorite moisturizer here!

Use Sunscreen Daily

Who’s been told more than once by their mother “to apply sunscreen before you go outside”? Well, mom was right, but not just during the summer.

It’s true, there is much stronger, visible sunlight in the summer. However, not applying sunscreen, no matter the season, may still expose you to rays that can lead to many skin conditions including cancer.

Sunscreen should also be applied in the winter. Even when it’s cloudy, the sun is still present. Don’t skip this step. Incorporate your favorite sunscreen into your routine and reapply frequently. The kinder you are to your skin now, the more it will thank you later.

Stay Hydrated

In addition to hydrating with moisturizers, the amount of water you drink has an enormous effect on your skin. Without water, your skin becomes sallow and dull in appearance. This look is more apparent when you’re battling harsh temperatures. Your skin tone may appear uneven and wrinkles may become more noticeable and distinct. Getting proper hydration on the inside is key to keeping your skin hydrated. Click here to learn more about how much water you should be drinking!
