Are You Using Face Masks Wrong?

By Staff Account Posted on

At home skincare has become a huge part of the cultural discourse. Not only are people paying more attention to their skin, but also the specific ingredients they’re applying. Masks of all types have been flying off the shelves, often touted as a symbol of the “self-care” movement. But, are you using your masks correctly? Believe it or not, there is a right way to apply your favorite face mask. Read on for all our tips and tricks!

Types of Masks

When it comes to choosing a mask, the possibilities are endless. Whether you prefer sheet, clay, or mud, there’s something for everyone. In fact, there are 5 different types:

  • Sheet
  • Clay
  • Mud
  • Gel
  • Cream

Though your preference matters, the form the mask comes in is not as important as the ingredients. Every mask is going to have a different makeup.

Before purchasing a mask, ask yourself what job you want the mask to do? Calming breakouts, hydrating the skin, brightening the complexion, and soothing inflammation are just a few of the ways skincare masks can be utilized.

With a simple Google search, you can find a wealth of knowledge about the key ingredients needed to perform your chosen task, as well as what to avoid.

Once you have an idea of what you’re looking for, you can analyze your masks more closely.

Application and Removal

So, you’ve picked out a mask and you're excited to get started. Great! Application and removal, while simple, may vary based on the type of mask, as well as the brand.

Spreadable Masks

For cream, mud, clay, and gel masks, spread an even amount of the mask around your skin, avoiding your lips and eyes. Refer and follow closely the instructions for your mask, as some may contain active ingredients that must be washed off in a certain time period.

Some masks in this category, like the gel or cream masks may be washed off or may come off in pieces once dried. Clay and mud masks will typically harden on the skin and must be rinsed with warm water to remove.

Sheet Masks

Sheet masks are the easiest and most compact way to have a mini facial. The instructions for sheet masks apply no matter what mask you choose, but be aware of any active ingredients.

Simply unfold the mask and line up your eyes, nose, and lips with the provided holes. Smooth the mask onto your face and trim excess material if necessary. After the noted time, remove the sheet mask. Check the instructions to be sure, but most masks do not require cleansing after use. If not, rub the remaining product into your skin.

Bonus Tips

  • Prepping your face is an important part of using a mask. Make sure your skin is clean and dry before application.
  • Don’t throw away the excess product from your sheet mask package! Pour the remaining contents into your hands and apply to your neck and decolletage.
  • Consider investing in a facial steamer. Steam the skin helps to open the pores, allowing the mask to work on deeper layers of the skin.
