How to Prevent Dry Skin in the Winter

By Staff Account Posted on

As days get shorter and the weather gets cooler, Our skin often becomes more pale, itchy, and dry. While many people assume they have to live with dull, dry skin through the wintertime, there are actually a few simple steps you can take to maintain glowing skin during the cold winter months.

But firstly, in order to prevent the problem, we should look into what causes it in the first place.

The Cause

The outer layer of your skin, called the epidermis, is your protection from harmful substances. In order to keep this layer healthy, it needs to stay hydrated and moisturized. During the winter, it’s harder to keep this layer hydrated because there’s less moisture in the air and the water in your skin evaporates more quickly. This essentially makes your skin feel dry, tight, and flaky.

Tips for Treating Dry Skin

While it’s relatively easy to let your skin dry out during winter, we have a few tips to keep your skin looking healthy and youthful despite the cold.

Take Shorter, Cooler Showers

It may feel nice to take long, piping hot showers, but it’s likely doing more harm than good. Hot baths and showers can dry out the skin if they’re too long—next time you bathe, try to slightly dial down the heat and take no longer than 5 minutes to cleanse yourself. This way, your skin will retain moisture that may otherwise be stripped from your skin with super hot water.

Avoid Harsh Cleansers

While all soaps can be drying, certain cleansers are especially irritating for skin. Exfoliants, scented soaps, and cleansers that contain unnecessary chemicals can strip your skin of its natural oils more so than natural soap. Try to stick with gentle cleansers that are fragrance-free to maintain the natural moisture in your skin.

Use a Humidifier

Indoor heating may keep you warm from the winter cold, but it won’t protect your skin. Unlike natural heat, indoor heating will suck the moisture out of your skin. To counteract this, consider investing in a humidifier to keep moisture in the air.

Choose a Natural Moisturizer

Arguably most important of all tips is the moisturize! Cold weather is unavoidable, but you can protect yourself against the harsh cold by adding a layer of moisturizer to your skin. However, not all lotion is built the same—some moisturizers contain drying chemicals and fragrances that can do more harm than good. For the healthiest skin, stick to a natural moisturizer that’s free of hidden ingredients.

Apply Daily

While it’s important what’s in your moisturizer, it doesn’t make a difference if you’re not routinely applying it. We suggest reapplying lotion every day to prevent dry skin. In some cases, it’s ideal to apply lotion twice daily during especially cold and dry days. We suggest applying lotion when your skin is slightly moist, such as after a shower, so it can hang onto some of that moisture.
